Properties and applications of neem oil
The neem oil, whose popular name was given in India in honor of the goddess Neemari, is a vegetable oil obtained from the cold pressing of Azadirachta Indica seeds, belonging to the family of Meliaceae; and is now known worldwide for its extraordinary properties and multiple applications.
The seeds contain the greatest variety and concentration of substances with medicinal effects, although they are present in other parts of the tree (leaves, bark, wood, roots, fruit pulp, flowers).
It is a plant belonging to the Ayurvedic tradition, used for millennia for its antibiotic, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antiparasitic activity.
In India, even sparrows know it, and it’s not just a saying! In fact, they add neem twigs and leaves to their nests, and analyses show the absence of many parasites usually present in these birds’ nests.
Neem oil, for its application on the skin is very potent and concentrated and can be added in a few drops to basic natural creams or milder vegetable oils, such as sweet almond oil or jojoba oil.
Neem oil commonly sold is not suitable for internal use, it cannot be ingested, but can be used for external or cosmetic applications, both on ourselves and on animals or plants.
Properties and benefits of neem oil
Neem oil, as we have seen, is characterized by antiviral, antibacterial, antiparasitic, antiseptic and antifungal properties, which make its use suitable not only for health and beauty care, but also for protecting plants and animals from parasite attacks.
Neem oil, in fact, contains active ingredients capable of counteracting viruses, bacteria, fungi, in addition to providing amoisturizing action, regenerating and restructuring for tissues and is therefore effective, for example, on the most common dermatological conditions.
It can be present in herbal preparations and natural cosmetics such as toothpaste, soaps, skin creams, and scalp products.
The smell of pure neem oil can be quite pungent and unpleasant, and where strictly necessary, this problem can be solved by adding some essential oils that, in addition to providing fragrance, have properties suitable for treating or preventing the disorder.
Eudermic action: its content of vitamin E and essential fatty acids make it suitable for preparing face and body creams with antioxidant and anti-aging power.
Anti-inflammatory action: due to the presence of prostaglandin inhibitors, neem oil resolves many gum conditions and for pyorrhea. Thanks to limonoids and catechins, powerful inhibitors of acute inflammation mediators, neem is used in treating pain from muscle strains, arthritis, rheumatism.
Healing action: commonly used for psoriasis and eczema, as it hydrates and protects the skin on one hand; while on the other, it reduces inflammation and heals irritation, flaking, and lesions caused by these disorders. For this reason, it is used in cases of extensive burns, infected wounds, and to stimulate healing and tissue reconstruction.
Antibacterial and antiviral action: among the bacterial strains countered by neem oil are Salmonella typhi and Staphylococcus aureus. In particular, the latter is responsible for the typical manifestations ofacne, characterized by abscesses and painful comedones. Staphylococcus aureus also contaminates many foods and causes secondary infections such as peritonitis, cystitis, meningitis. Many of its strains are resistant to penicillin and other specialized antibiotics. In the past, neem twigs were chewed (as we chew gum today) daily by millions of Indians: today it is used in toothpastes that counteract plaque formation and significantly whiten teeth, or even in the form of mother tincture with antiseptic properties. Neem has given the best results against theHerpes Virus (oral and body).
Antifungal action: effective against 14 types of skin fungi, neem oil, among others, inhibits Trichosporon (gastro-intestinal tract infections) and Geotrichum (infections of the bronchi, lungs, and mucous membranes). Its greater efficacy and safety (no side effects) have been found against Candida Albicans, infections caused by Trichophyton (hair, skin/nail infections, athlete’s foot), Ringworm (caused by Epidermophyton).
Insect repellent action: neem oil is one of the natural remedies against insect bites especially to counter mosquitoes, particularly during the summer period. Against scalp parasites (such as lice) and mites of scabies. Even for animals, it is an effective flea repellent and a completely ecological antiparasitic for plants, so much so that it is used in biological control against many parasites in agriculture, because it is a natural pesticide.
